History Ravel composed the String Quartet in G major (a key which he used only rarely) as a piano trio "in which the two other instruments are not reduced to simple accompaniment, but are actively present in the construction of the melody and the harmony" (Ravel, 1951:7). Although it was first heard at a private recital on 6 June 1928, it was not published until 1947 when Ravel wrote a preface for a new edition of his 12 Quartets for the Naxos Records label. The manuscript is dedicated to Claude Debussy, who received the work before it was published. The recording of the quartet performed by the Aix-en-Provence String Quartet and the French String Quartet Association was released on the Label CCO in France and Naxos Records in the United States. Structure The work is in four movements, which are generally held to be free but the development of the 1st movement is more dramatic. The first movement has three main sections: 1. Allegro 2. Larghetto 3. Molto allegro
